Description
Today the traditional Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Holy, Saint Edward, King, Confessor. Saint Edward, King of England, was a faithful model for all Catholic Kings. He was called the "Father of the Poor," to whom he distributed his worldly goods to. He was unexpectedly raised to the throne of & England at the age of forty years, twenty-seven years of which he had passed in exile. When He was on the throne, the virtues of his earlier years was, simplicity, gentleness, lowliness but above all was his angelic purity, shone with new brightness. Then by the rare inspiration of Holy God, he married to content to his nobles and people, but he still preserved his perfect chastity in the wedded state. So little did he set his heart on riches, and when he saw his servant robbing his treasury he just let him escape, saying the poor fellow needed the gold more than he did. He loved to stand at his palace gate, speaking kindly to the poor beggars and lepers who crowded about him, and of many in whom he healed of their diseases. Then the long wars had brought the kingdom to a sad state, but Saint Edward’s zeal and sanctity soon wrought a great change. His reign of twenty four years was one of almost unbroken peace, the country grew prosperous, the ruined churches rose under his hand, the weak lived secure, then for ages afterwards men spoke with affection of the “laws of good Saint Edward.” The holy king had a great devotion to building and enrich the churches. Westminster Abbey was his latest and the noblest of his works. He faithfully pasted away in the year 1066. His body reposes in Westminster Cathedral.
Reflection: David longed to build a temple for God’s service. Solomon reckoned it his glory to accomplish the work. But we, who have God made flesh dwelling in our tabernacles, ought to think no time, no zeal, no treasures too much to devote to the splendor and beauty of a Catholic church.
